Safety & Site Requirements

Prepare for safe PacWizz operation: tank pressure relief, outside gas venting, hearing protection, approved power, and operating conditions.

Read this before connecting your PacWizz

PacWizz controls gas flow, but it does not replace the tank's safety equipment. Check the tank, gas supply, venting, valves, and power before every run.

Tank pressure and relief

Only connect to a tank with a correctly fitted pressure relief valve (PRV). The manufacturer specifies an appropriate 15 psi relief valve, or a lower setting where required. Never exceed the tank's permitted pressure or bypass its relief valve. BrewWizz products are classed as associated apparatus, not pressure-rated tanks.

  • Maximum PacWizz head pressure is 15 psi.
  • Maximum foot pressure is 30 psi, including the pressure from the liquid above the bottom sensor. This is a sensor limit, not permission to pressurize the tank headspace to 30 psi.
  • The packaging and purge defaults include 15 psi. A default is not a safe setting for every tank: use values within your tank, fittings, and relief-valve limits. If your tank requires a lower relief setting, confirm an appropriate operating setup with BrewWizz before running it.
  • Fit tank-side isolation valves so the tank can be isolated when packaging needs to pause.
  • In a foot-sensor packaging setup, keep the tank-side valve open while pressurizing. A closed tank-side valve can cause the PRV to trigger.

Gas releases and ventilation

Large releases of CO₂ or N₂ can displace breathable air and cause asphyxiation. Purging must only be performed with appropriate ventilation/extraction. Route the vent discharge outside the building using a suitable installation. Do not leave a tank purging overnight.

  • Fit CO₂ alarms in facilities using CO₂, and follow your facility's gas-safety procedures.
  • Ensure enclosed areas have suitable vents and extraction. Do not rely on a door or window as your planned purge exhaust route.
  • Remember that nitrogen also displaces oxygen. A CO₂ alarm is not a substitute for suitable precautions when using N₂.
  • Plan for the gas volume and duration of the purge; see Purge Times & Gas Supply.
  • Use the recommended outside-venting arrangement.

Noise and trip hazards

Venting can produce sudden noise up to 100 dBA. Wear hearing protection when working close to the unit, and warn nearby people before venting.

Route the foot sensor cable, power cable, and hoses away from walkways. A bottom-mounted sensor cable can create a trip hazard and can be damaged if pulled, stepped on, or caught.

Power and servicing

  • Use only a manufacturer-supplied power supply. The manual calls for a CAT II, double-insulated supply.
  • PacWizz power rating is 24 V DC, 24 W maximum.
  • Arrange servicing through the manufacturer or with assistance from a BrewWizz representative. Although the unit is modular and replacement parts may be installed by an end user, contact BrewWizz for guidance before servicing.
  • Avoid damage from cleaning/CIP, mishandling, and strained cables or connections. CIP means clean-in-place; it describes the tank's cleaning system, not an instruction to clean the PacWizz through that circuit.

The enclosure is described as a modified NEMA 4 box. Do not treat that description as permission to expose the unit to cleaning chemicals or run CIP through it. Ask BrewWizz if you need cleaning or installation guidance.

Before-you-start checklist

  • Tank has an appropriate, correctly fitted PRV and you know its pressure limits.
  • Gas, regulators, hoses, and connections are suitable for the installation.
  • Ventilation/extraction and CO₂ alarms are in place as appropriate.
  • For purging, exhaust is safely routed outside and someone will supervise the run.
  • Isolation valves are in the correct positions for the selected setup.
  • Sensor, power, and valve cables are connected and routed without trip hazards.
  • Manufacturer-supplied power is available and operating conditions are within limits.
