Temperature Sensor (WizzTemp)
Connecting and positioning the WizzTemp sensor, and why its accuracy determines whether your carbonation hits target.
Temperature sensor (WizzTemp)
The WizzTemp sensor reads product temperature. Its reading drives the entire carbonation calculation, so where you place it — and whether it is accurate — determines whether the beer hits its target.
Carbonation volumes are calculated from temperature. A probe that reads warm causes systematic under-carbonation: the FizzWizz thinks the beer is warmer than it is and calculates less CO₂ than needed. See the Slushy WizzTemp Test to verify accuracy.
Connecting the sensor
The FizzWizz detects a connected sensor automatically.
Power the FizzWizz OFF before connecting or disconnecting sensors.
Power off
Switch the FizzWizz OFF.
Connect to the temperature sensor port
Plug the WizzTemp sensor into the temperature sensor connector on the FizzWizz.
Confirm the reading
Power the unit and confirm the Temperature field on the display shows a plausible reading. In Test Mode the value updates live.
On a FizzWizz, the temperature sensor and the Foot Pressure Sensor share the same connector. If you use both, you need the optional sensor switch box so they can stay permanently connected and be selected with a toggle.
Positioning the sensor
Where the sensor sits determines what temperature it reads. The carbonation calculation assumes it is reading the product, not the tank wall or the head space.
| Location | Suitability |
|---|---|
| WizzStone-Combo thermowell | Purpose-built for this — the carrier has a built-in thermowell. Recommended |
| A tank thermowell in the product | Suitable, provided it reads product rather than the tank wall |
| Clamped to the outside of the tank | Not recommended — reads ambient and tank wall, not product |
| In the head space | Not suitable — reads gas temperature, not product |
If you are running multiple tanks, a WizzKoga Selector lets up to six permanently installed sensors be switched between one or two FizzWizz units, so sensors can stay in the tanks.
Verifying accuracy
The Health Check (Ident C) confirms the temperature reading is plausible. To confirm it is accurate, run the Slushy WizzTemp Test — it compares the probe against a 0 °C ice-water reference, the only way to prove genuine calibration.
| Test | What it proves | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Ident C / T | The reading is plausible and has not changed significantly | Check 2 · Check 5 |
| Slushy WizzTemp Test | The probe is accurate against a known reference | Slushy WizzTemp Test |
Use deionised water instead of tap water for the slushy test. Without dissolved impurities the freezing point is closer to exactly 0 °C, giving a tighter pass/fail band.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature not representative | WizzTemp sensor or internal loom | Ident C — Check 2 |
| Temperature changed significantly between checks | Sensor or loom; confirm with the slushy test | Ident T — Check 5 |
| Slushy test reads high | Usually insufficient agitation, not a faulty probe | Slushy WizzTemp Test |
| Slushy test reads impossibly low | Faulty probe or internal loom | Slushy WizzTemp Test |
| Carbonation consistently below target with everything else passing | Probe reading warm | Carbonation & Brite Pressure |
